PartNest - Modular Stackable Storage for SMD Parts and Wires

Introduction
I already did a take on designing SMD parts containers for SMD tapes. Recently, I came across the problem of storing smaller gauge wires. I thought it would be nice to store them in the same kind of containers I use for my SMD storage. What bothered me about my last design was the amount of time it took to assemble the containers with a rail, and also that the rails themselves are inconvenient to store. So I had the idea of making the containers connect to each other, which also eliminates the need to print a cover for each one. I started experimenting with the dovetail approach I used for my SMD storage tray.
After a few iterations, I was quite happy with the results. I ended up designing an SMD parts container that still works like the ones from, for example, Robin Reiter, but is easier to print and can be stacked. I also designed a matching storage container for wires. To make handling a bit easier, I created an angled stand and hooks for IKEA Skådis boards, which can be directly attached to the connected containers.
Features
- Only one non-printable part: a single spring per container
- Only one cover per stack (reduces parts and print time)
- Label area for writing or printed labels
- Fully customizable using the OpenSCAD customizer
- Wire container with a rewind mechanism
Printing and Assembly
The default container size is 60 mm inner diameter, with a width of 8 mm for the SMD containers and 9 mm for the wire containers. You can easily customize these dimensions using the OpenSCAD customizer. I provide STL files for the 60 mm containers with the default widths, along with all matching parts, including the stands and hooks for IKEA Skådis. The rest is up to you.
For easier printing, I also added full container sets that include all required parts for one container (except the label inlay).
- Additional parts: One 0.3 mm wire spring (4 mm outer diameter, 20 mm length) per container
- Layer height: 0.2 mm
- Nozzle: 0.4 mm
- Smooth print bed
- PLA or PLA+ recommended
Wire container assembly
First, screw both parts of the spool together. Set the slider to the lowest position. Insert the spring and push the slider upward. You can compress the spring with a flathead screwdriver to make this easier.
Next, place the gear into its slot and press it down until it clicks into place. Insert the spool with the gear side facing up. The wire should be routed as shown in the picture.
If you want to use a label, simply bend the label insert and slide it into the corresponding slots on top of the container.
SMD container assembly
The SMD container assembly is very similar. Just make sure the slider is inserted all the way at the bottom.
